A stencil, template, or mask can be used in numerous ways to help you create beautiful and unusual fabric for your quiltmaking.
A stencil is anything that prevents color from reaching selected areas of the fabric, thus creating a pattern. It can be a purchased stencil made from clear plastic, or your own design cut from an X-ray plate or freezer paper. It can even be a found object, like leaves.
Very little equipment is needed to stencil, and it can be done in the kitchen or on the dining room table. Even though the process is extremely easy, the results can be as complex and beautiful as you wish to make them.
There are many ways to stencil and dye fabrics. This book just provides a stepping-off point. As you experiment, you will discover ways that are easier for you. Enjoy the process. There are no right or wrong ways to stencil. It is the results that matter. You just have to start. It doesn't matter if your first effort isn't so great; it will lead to something else. The first steps may be a challenge, but very soon you will get the hang of the technique and discover a whole new source of creativity within yourself.
